As the birthplace of much of the UK’s chemical industry, and with a history of producing salt and alkalis stretching back more than 300 years, Cheshire is still synonymous with innovation and cutting edge developments today.
With 95 companies, 6,000 skilled personnel and an annual GVA of £366 million, the industry in Cheshire has been transformed into a modern dynamic cluster of bulk, fine and speciality manufacturers, downstream industries and specialist service companies. It encompasses businesses like Brunner Mond - the largest manufacturer and supplier of soda ash and refined sodium bicarbonate in Europe, and Shell’s oil refinery at Stanlow, one of Europe’s most productive sites, which manufactures petrol, aviation fuels and chemicals for detergents, pharmaceuticals, adhesives and dyes.
Other major companies in this sector include: Cabot Carbon Ltd, Henkel Loctite Adhesives, Innospec Speciality Chemicals Ltd (previously The Associated Octel Co Ltd) and GrowHow UK Ltd.
