Power Cuts

Main heading

Sub-heading

CandlesLoss of electricity, gas or water.

Severe weather can mean power cuts and possibly loss of other services over a wide area.

  1. Keep a small emergency pack and know where to find it - even in the dark.
  2. Keep in it a torch, radio (with batteries), candles and matches.
  3. Watch out for fire risks if you have to use the candles.
  4. You may need to switch off supplies at the main - if you don't know how to, check with gas, electricity and water authorities now.
  5. If you need the police, fire or ambulance services, dial 999 and give the operator your number so that you can be traced if the line is cut.

In a critical period do not ring the police as an information service as they will probably not Torchhave the capacity to answer your call – tune in to the Local Radio Station.

  6. If anyone is seriously injured, you will obviously need the Ambulance Service but you may be able to deal with minor injuries yourself if you have some knowledge of first aid.
