500 historical tithe maps of Cheshire dating from 1836 and 1851 will be available online for the first time on the County Council’s website from June – revolutionising access.
The earliest reliable, large-scale maps of individual townships in the county, they are currently held at the Cheshire and Chester Record Office in Duke Street Chester where researchers can view them.
The project, which has benefited from Heritage Lottery funding, has taken three years to complete. 60 specially trained volunteers worked tirelessly to build the database, and staff and pupils at Kelsall Primary School also played a major part in the development of the resource. County Information Services created the website.
Says County Archivist Paul Newman, pictured above, “The project is an important first step in our aim to open up access by providing digital images of records on our website.
“It will also conserve the unique and irreplaceable maps by reducing the frequency with which they are handled.”
Cheshire libraries will be hosting ‘Online History Maps’ sessions in late May/early June to tie in with Adult Learners’ Week and Local History Month.
