Proposals for a new ‘strong and united’ Cheshire - as part of a process to change how local government is organised – are now officially favoured by Cheshire County Council.
Our elected County Councillors supported the creation of a single authority for the whole of Cheshire by a majority vote of 31 to 16.
This new authority, based on the County Council, would be responsible for the services currently provided by the County Council and the six districts.
Cheshire’s 3500 town and parish councillors would have a stronger voice under the proposal – along with up to 120 newly-elected councillors – if the County Council’s submission meets with Government approval.
The Government’s decision on the option it favours for the future of Cheshire Councils was expected by the end of March and you can have your say and express your views on its preferred option for consultation.

Communities and Local Government Secretary of State Ruth Kelly says the Government’s aim is to strengthen leadership and channel more power to local level and make it easier for more people to have a say in decision-making in their communities.
The possible changes follow October’s Local Government White Paper ‘Strong and Prosperous Communities’ and the resulting Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Bill which is currently going through Parliament.
A final decision on the future of local government structures is expected at the end of July following consultation.
If changes are agreed, elections under the new system would take place in May 2008, and be fully operational by April 2009.
