Make SID Smile! 
Cheshire drivers who stick to the speed limit will be rewarded with an electronic smile - part of a new initiative to help cut speeding in local communities.
Now community groups and organisations concerned about speeding dangers can borrow the equipment and introduce smiles to their neighbourhood.
The County Council’s Road Safety Unit - together with the Area Traffic and Transportation teams have launched Speed Indicator Devices - ‘SIDs’ - portable, electronic signs to help manage speed on Cheshire’s roads.
Drivers keeping within speed limits are rewarded with a SID smiley face. But motorists who flout the law get a warning SID frowning face to slow down.
Research shows that traffic slows by an average of 5 mph at sites where it’s in use.
Thanks to funding from the Cheshire Safety Camera Partnership, SIDs are now available around the county for use by parish councils and approved community groups on a loan basis. Some, known as ‘Clever SIDs’, are able to record the speed of passing vehicles - data which can be downloaded and given to the community on request.
They complement other existing community-led anti-speeding initiatives such as ‘Set the Pace’ and ‘Community Speed Watch’.
Says Senior Road Safety Officer Justine Hart: ‘Real differences can be made where communities tackle issues of local concern, such as speeding. SIDs are successful in other parts of the country – now we hope to continue the trend in Cheshire.”
