Independent inspectors say Cheshire Fire Authority is providing a four star emergency response service which is performing strongly.

In its report the Audit Commission, the national body which ensures public services deliver value for money, said: “Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service has clear operational direction, and is well structured to meet its objectives.”

The Commission has assessed every fire and rescue service in the country and given each one a score ranging from 1 (Inadequate performance, below minimum requirements) to 4 - (Performing strongly, well above minimum requirements).

In awarding Cheshire the top score, the Commission said: “The Service is performing strongly in its prevention and protection work, and uses a wide range of flexible resources to deliver an extensive programme of community safety.

“The Service has a clear understanding of its community and is very focused on meeting its needs.” Fire Authority Chairman Cllr. Tony Hooton added: “I am delighted that we have independent recognition of the excellent work which is being done by our frontline emergency response and community safety services.

“These are the parts of our service which really make a difference to our residents by responding effectively to incidents and preventing fires and other emergencies from happening in the first place.”
