Ever tried to navigate your way through the maze of information about services only to be passed from one person or organisation to another?
Imagine how much more difficult that can be if you have a disability.
Cheshire County Council was chosen by the Office for Disability Issues (ODI) to launch the Accessible Information Project. Cheshire, one of four national projects, hosted the launch in Crewe earlier this year.
Anne McGuire, Minister for Disabled People, said at the launch: “We’ve looked at how disabled people get information about public services, what they think of it, and how it can be improved.
“We will be working with a number of councils, including Cheshire, North Tyneside, Croydon and Surrey, to put into practice ideas following a project looking at the information needs of disabled people.”
Good quality and easily accessible information on how to avoid rogue tradesmen and what local support groups exist, will all be drawn into one source.
The project will explore innovative and imaginative ways of making the information available to disabled people and carers - such as texting to mobile phones, using the internet or information points in local libraries.
