Changes in how parking regulations are enforced in Crewe and Nantwich borough are set to come in force in August this year.
Its key aims are to reduce traffic congestion and improve visibility for motorists and pedestrians alike - especially in town centres.
Other benefits brought to the community in response to local needs include:
- Keeping main roads clear of illegally parked vehicles
- Encouraging commuters to use long stay car parks, freeing up short stay spaces in the town centres for shoppers
- Ensuring spaces meant only for disabled people with a blue badge are not used by drivers not eligible to park there
- Ambulances and fire engines are less likely to find their routes blocked by parked vehicles
Currently when a driver parks illegally, such as on double yellow lines, it’s the responsibility of the police or a traffic warden to apply a fixed penalty notice.
Cheshire County Council has applied to become a Special Parking Area and this responsibility will pass to Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council, who will be providing trained
Parking Attendants to issue Penalty Charge Notices in future for illegal parking, loading and waiting.
Changes will not make any difference to current car parking regulations. Through a partnership between Cheshire County Council and Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council, the aim is to keep traffic moving by making streets clearer.
Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council is one of three Cheshire borough councils planning to switch to this new system in coming years – while over 100 Councils across the UK already have this system in place.
