The headteacher of the first new-build high school to open its doors to students in Cheshire for over 30 years has asked them to pledge to make it ‘the best school in the world’.
Welcoming students on the first day of the new Autumn term, Ged Ward, Head of the new £15m 900-student Macclesfield High School said:
“Staff and visitors to the school tell me it has the ‘wow’ factor. And yes, the building is fantastic and the amenities second to none.

“Our contractor has done the first half of the job,” he told new Year 7 students. “But our school is not just this building; what is really important are the relationships we build within it.”
His vision is for Macclesfield High School - MHS - to stand for students being ‘Motivated, Happy and Successful’.
And he urged the packed assembly hall to hear his message: “I want you to learn, to enjoy coming to this school and to be successful. You deserve the very best.”

Based on a huge new-build 20-hectare site, the £38m Macclesfield Learning Zone caters for diverse needs and comprises the new High School, a 600-student Sixth Form College, Macclesfield College and Park Lane Special School.
He hailed the project as ‘ground-breaking’ for its partnership work involving the County Council, Macclesfield Borough Council, the Learning and Skills Council and the NWDA, adding: “This has to be one of the most exciting projects in Cheshire, unprecedented in its scale – the opportunities at this new Zone for lifelong learning are unlimited.”
