A County of Opportunity

Cheshire is a rich and varied county, stretching from the Dee and Mersey estuaries up to the windswept moors of the Peak National Park.

Its towns, many of which boast historic roots, are thriving and dynamic places, facing the future with confidence.

There are the 'silk' towns of Macclesfield and Congleton and the 'salt' towns of Winsford, Northwich, Middlewich and Nantwich, with its intimate charm. There is the 'railway' town of Crewe and the major industrial centre of Ellesmere Port.

In contrast to these, there are Malpas and Knutsford, two of the oldest towns in the county, with their timber-framed and old brick buildings and Sandbach, a thriving market town boasting two Saxon crosses which stand in the town square.

Chester, founded by the Romans as a legionary fortress, has a historic ambience. Its history, which spans 1,900 years, can be seen today in the Roman amphitheatre and in the Grosvenor museum; its Norman cathedral and castle; its complete circuit of walls, partly Roman, partly medieval and partly Georgian; its unique rows, covered walkways at first floor level, now used as shops, often built over medieval crypts; and its splendid black and white architecture, blending the 17th century with the Victorian.
