Apprenticeship Programme

Are you aged 16+?

Want to join one of the largest and most successful Local Authorities in the Country?

What are Apprenticeships?

Apprenticeships are a mixture of work-based training and education, which include the following basic elements:

  • A National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in the appropriate occupational area.
  • Key Skills, e.g. communication and application of number.
  • A technical certificate (which underpins your NVQ with the knowledge you will need to do the job)
young people

There are two types of Apprenticeship, Foundation and Advanced.

The different level of attainment between the Foundation and Advanced Apprenticeships are reflected by the competencies required and qualifications gained.

The Council has many years experience of providing quality training placements for apprentices. We also use this programme as a recruitment tool and many of our apprentices are recruited into permanent positions during or following their training programme.

The Council in conjunction with Total People have vacancies for training in Foundation and Advanced Apprenticeships in the following occupational areas:

You will receive training and varied work experience, which leads to a nationally recognised qualification in the above areas.

How long does an Apprenticeship last?

Although there is no set time to complete an apprenticeship as they vary widely in size and content, the length of time taken will depend on the ability of the individual apprentice. Initially you will be given a 12 month temporary contract (conditions apply).

Placements are rotated every 6 months and permanent employment can be achieved at any time during your training period. Usually your training will continue until your training plan is completed.

Training

Training is funded by the Learning and Skills Council and managed by Total People who will contact you shortly after you start your work placement.

They will produce an individual training plan for you.

How much will I get paid?

Getting paid while you learn might sound too good to be true, but as an apprentice with the Council you really do get the best of both worlds. If you have the dedication to succeed in the world of work and you’re not afraid to commit yourself to a combination of training and study then an apprenticeship may be for you.

Currently the Council’s apprenticeship rate is £81.98* per week rising to £87.10* per week on your 17th birthday.

Your pay will be paid monthly, directly into your bank account. Unless you have other income you should not expect to pay income tax or national insurance.

*subject to change from 1st April 2008.

Holidays

You will be entitled to 25 days paid holiday plus public holidays per year.

Don’t delay!
