Work To Begin on Major £1.5 Million Road Maintenance Scheme at Alpraham, Calveley and Hurleston
Cheshire County Council is to invest £1.5 million replacing worn out sections of the A51 Nantwich Road in Alpraham, Calveley and Hurleston. These urgent works begin on Monday 6 February and continue the County Council’s intensive programme of similar works completed since 2002.
The project includes kerbing, drainage improvements and almost 3 miles of carriageway strengthening and resurfacing. Although most of the narrow Alpraham to Calveley section was resurfaced for safety reasons about 6 years ago, a more substantial long-term strengthening treatment is now necessary.
Seven days a week working, at three separate but simultaneous work areas, should enable these essential works to be finished in 11 weeks. This represents a substantial saving in time when compared to the 4 to 5 month period normally associated with this scale of work. However, this will mean that traffic using the A51 Nantwich Road between the A49/A51 Tiverton Crossroads and the A51/A534 Burford Crossroads will face ‘significant delays’ during the roadworks.
Diversion routes for through-traffic and HGV’s will be signed via the A49 Whitchurch Road, A534 Wrexham Road and the A534 Cuckoo Lane. Local Nantwich Road access will be maintained but will involve the use of local diversions as work safely progresses.
Besides temporary traffic signals throughout, there will also be periods requiring weekend and overnight road closures on the A51 Nantwich Road between the A41/A51 Four Lane Ends Crossroads at Tiverton and the A51/A534 Burford Crossroads. Advance notification of closures will be provided via road signs and local notification.
County Councillor John Burke, Executive Member for Highways and Transportation said, “As the local Highways Authority we remain committed to ensuring that Cheshire’s highways are safe and well maintained”.
“That commitment includes obtaining the best value from maintenance while minimising any associated disruption to road users and local communities”.
“We hope road users, local residents and businesses will show understanding and cooperation during this period of work,” he said.
