Residents Urged To Help Shape ‘New-Look’ Crewe Railway Gateway

A major public consultation into ambitious plans to rejuvenate the landmark Crewe Railway Station and its surrounding area launches next week.

During the three-month consultation information leaflets with feedback forms will be delivered to households and businesses throughout the area.

To mark the consultation launch on Tuesday, February 6, the Crewe Rail Gateway partnership is holding a public exhibition at Crewe Alexandra Football Club from 12pm-8pm.

Visitors will have the opportunity to find out more about the scheme and to register feedback to help shape the final design.

The Crewe Rail Gateway project is a major redevelopment and refurbishment scheme which aims to transform the station area to create a transport gateway fit for the 21st century.

The scheme could include:

• A landmark building giving a modern image for the station, the railway and the town and a regeneration focus for local businesses

• New station access from Weston Road for all traffic except buses

• Improved bus and taxi interchange

• New west-facing entrance and concourse linked to car park and drop-off point

• New multi-storey car park with 1100 spaces on Weston Road, replacing current 550 space car park at Pedley Street

• Better and safer passenger and staff facilities at concourse and platform level

As well as new commercial development in and around the station, the scheme is expected to generate investment in new apartments, business facilities, retailing, student accommodation, offices, and hotel and conference facilities.

Work on the project could start in 2009 with an anticipated completion date of 2011.

Crewe Rail Gateway is part of the Department for Transport’s regional 10-year transport programme and is supported by the North West Development Agency in its regional economic strategy.

The scheme has widespread local and regional support from organisations including Cheshire County Council, Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council, Bentley Motors and MMU Cheshire University.

Other partners in the development of the scheme are the Cheshire and Warrington Economic Alliance, Manchester Airport, Network Rail, North West Development Agency, the Railway Heritage Trust and Virgin Trains.
