Ellesmere Port Academy Plan Reaches Important Stage

An important stage has been reached in the proposed development of an Academy in Ellesmere Port.

Children’s Services Executive Member David Rowlands has today (Monday) decided to issue statutory public notices proposing the closure of Cheshire Oaks High School and Ellesmere Port Specialist School of Performing Arts with effect from August 31st 2009.

This is subject to continued support from the Minister Jim Knight and his Department and the signing of the appropriate Memorandum of Understanding,

It opens the way for the establishment of the Academy from September 1 2009 if the final decision is made to close the two existing schools.

In coming to his decision, County Councillor Rowlands considered advice relating to the overall funding arrangements for the Academy and was also informed that there is now a good prospect of a new central site for the Academy being obtained. This should enable easier access for all students as well as offering enhanced opportunities of working alongside West Cheshire College in particular.

“These Statutory Public Notices will be issued in early January and will give residents six weeks in which to make their views known on the proposed closures.” said County Councillor Rowlands.

“The £25 million investment to a new Academy in Ellesmere Port is an opportunity too good to miss and if we do not take this next step we would be closing off an option that could benefit generations of Ellesmere Port young people.”

Continued County Councillor Rowlands: “While much work is needed to develop plans for the proposed Academy, we have been fortunate in having the consistent support and encouragement of the Department for Schools, Children and Families, and in gaining strong sponsors in the University of Chester and the Chester Church of England Diocese, both of whom have an excellent track record in education.

”It is very important that we develop this far reaching and exciting proposal which has the potential to transform what we can offer to the young people of Ellesmere Port and widen considerably the opportunities available to them.”

Pupils accepted for each school would initially be taught at their respective schools and then at the proposed Academy.
