Helsby High Students Represent The North in a Special Contest
Four students from Helsby High School represented Cheshire and the Northern Region in the national final of this year’s Young Consumers of the Year Competition.
The contest, co-ordinated by the Trading Standards Institute and run locally by Cheshire Trading Standards is designed to encourage competitors to become confident consumers and is an opportunity for young people to show awareness of the world around them and their ability to make informed choices about what they eat, what they buy and how they manage their money.
The final of the contest took place at the annual conference of the Trading Standards Institute in Bournemouth.
Amongst the contest audience was Cheshire’s Executive Member for Community and Communications Nora Dolphin who said: “Hundreds of schools had entered this year’s competition to find Britain’s best-informed young consumers.
“The team from Helsby High School had already won the Cheshire heat and the northern final of the competition and in the national final they took on 11 other regional winners from across the country.
“Unfortunately they were runners up in their heat, narrowly missing out on a place in the final, finishing in fifth place.
“They had worked extremely hard and were excellent ambassadors for Cheshire.”
The Cheshire team were made up of captain Chris Simpson, Charlotte Beaumont, Sarah Galley and Grant Goodband.
Added teacher Rob Hargreaves: “It was an amazing experience and the fact that they won a place in the national final is a testament to the hard work they put into learning all about their legal rights as a consumer, as well as their keenness to enter a competition like this.”
