Changes to Landfill Sites In Chester and Macclesfield

Changes are to be made at the landfill sites of Gowy near Chester and Danes Moss in Macclesfield.

The separate schemes were given approval by Cheshire’s Development Regulatory Committee today (Friday).

3C Waste Limited, a subsidiary of Waste Recycling Group Limited applied for planning permission to increase the landfill site capacity at the Gowy Landfill site.

This would be done by increasing the volume of the landfill by 1.39 million cubic metres by contouring the northern part of the site.

The application would not conflict with the objectives of the Green Belt.

When the landfill site comes to the end of its life the final restored landform would include a hill with predominantly wooded slopes and areas of grassland.

Planning permission was grated subject to a Section 106 Agreement and conditions included screen planting, noise limits and monitoring programme and hours of operation.

3C Waste Limited also applied for the construction of a temporary waste transfer station when Danes Moss Landfill site closes in 2009.

The proposed temporary single steel transfer station building would receive 83,000 tonnes of waste each year made up of municipal, commercial and industrial waste.

Refuse collection vehicles will deposit their loads onto the building floor and materials that could be recycled would be loaded into appropriate bulking bays.

When sufficient waste had been collected it would be loaded into a 20 tonne capacity heavy goods vehicle which would transport the waste to the closest landfill facility which at present is Maw Green in Crewe.

Planning conditions agreed by the committee included time limited permission until March 31st 2014, all handling of waste to be inside the building with the roller doors shut and all vehicles should be covered or fully securely sheeted at all times.

Development Regulatory Chairman Barrie Hardern said: “Members stipulated that in their opinion the Gowy landfill site should remain open until 2016 and the site should be restored a year later.

“Planning permission was granted on the Danes Moss application subject to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government deciding not to call in the application.”
