Pupils From Chester’s Firs School Officially Unveil Zebra Crossing
Pupils from The Firs School in Newton, Chester, officially unveiled a zebra crossing which helps them cross the road safely to and from school.
The crossing in Wealstone Lane near its junction with Newton Lane, is part of Cheshire County Council’s safer routes to school scheme.
The Firs is in the process of setting up a walking bus after working with the Safer Routes to School Team. The aim is to reduce the number of cars parked outside the school in the morning and afternoon.
Janet Mills, School Travel Team manager said: "The Firs have been working hard to reduce the number of cars parking directly outside the school and have been encouraging parents, who live a distance from the school, to park in the car park of a local church and walk the final distance.
"The aim of the crossing is two-fold, as it will give pupils, from this and other schools, a safer place to cross Wealstone Lane and reduce the amount of cars parked around the school."
Added Head teacher Margaret Denton: "This crossing is a real boon for the pupils both at the start and end of the school day and also when we walk to the local church and local sports facilities.
"It is also proving to be of benefit for residents because it slows down traffic at this busy junction."
As well as the zebra crossing, Cheshire County Council funded other improvements which included re-aligning of kerbs to slow down traffic at the junction, resurfacing on the approach to the junction and putting a pedestrian traffic island in nearby Well Lane.
