Tory Wins Abbey By-Election

Herbert Manley is Cheshire’s newest County Councillor.

The Conservative candidate won yesterday’s (Thursday) Abbey by-election by a majority of 1356.

The result was:

Herbert Manley  Conservative  2213
Arthur Wood   Liberal Democrat 857
Mark Green   Labour  432

The turnout was 35.97 percent.

The seat became vacant following the decision of Conservative County Councillor Shirley Harris to step down earlier this year.

Councillor Manley represents the Hartford and Whitegate ward on Vale Royal Borough Council and holds the position of Lead Councillor for Area Working and Regeneration.

He has also stood for the Abbey ward in the elections for the Cheshire West and Chester shadow authority – the results for which are expected later today.

A Hartford resident for over 40 years, Councillor Manley is a former employee of ICI and its successor companies in the Northwich and Runcorn areas.

He is married with four children and four grandchildren and lists his hobbies as gardening and travel.
