Walk To School – Join The Sound Detectives!
This year’s national Walk to School campaign focuses on everyone doing their bit during Noise Action Week (19 – 23 May).
Cheshire County Council’s schools, parents and children are being asked to be ‘Sound Detectives’ – and enjoy all the sounds they would normally not hear if they were travelling to school in a car.
“I am sure that children will enjoy walking to school while noting different noises” said Executive member for Highways and Transportation Eveleigh Moore-Dutton.
“Certainly we are asking them to explore the world around them in a different way
“This year more than a 184 schools are taking part in the walk to school campaign, that’s an increase of 34 schools this year.
“Walking is not only the perfect exercise and a great way to start the day but it also eases traffic congestion outside the school gates”.
Continued County Councillor Moore-Dutton: “We want to encourage everyone to consider how they travel to school and to try walking there and back for a week. Who knows, you might just find it is quicker, healthier and less stressful?
“Cars produce more pollution per kilometre on short journeys when the engine is cold and the vehicle keeps stopping and starting in traffic jams – does that sound like your journey to school?”
Catriona Stewart, Headteacher of Kingsmead Primary School in Northwich said: “Walking to school is always a priority here and children report on the progress made every week. “It is something we take very seriously indeed”.
