Congleton Prepares to Dance Its Way into the Record Books
Children from 10 primary schools in Congleton are hoping to dance their way into the record books when they attempt the world’s largest Maypole Dance in the town’s park next Wednesday (May 21).
Some 150 pupils will take part in the event which is being organised by Congleton Town Council to help celebrate 150 years of ribbon making in the town.
The town plans to smash the current record of 128 dancers held since July 2006 by Bradworthy in North Devon.
Town Mayor Councillor Douglas Parker admitted that the idea of attempting the record seemed ambitious at first.
He said: “It would have been so easy to have written it off as too difficult, but we’re not like that in Congleton.
“Two local companies rose to the challenge - Berisford Ribbons agreed to supply 150 ribbons each measuring 30 metres, and Site Engineering Services (SES) Ltd group, with the help of A & S Long Building Contractors and Structural Design Solutions, have sponsored the design, build and installation of the temporary 30 foot pole.
“Dance instructors volunteered their time to train the children and many people have offered help on the day.
“There’s a good reason why Congleton was rated the top-ranked rural area in Northern England and 30th best place to live in the UK.”
In order to qualify for the Guinness World Record all 150 children must complete the dance for five minutes.
The children will be given ‘I danced in the World’s Largest Maypole Dance’ t-shirts and a Guinness World Records certificate.
Photo Opportunity: Reporters and photographers are invited to the event on Wednesday May 21, 2pm, at Hankinson’s Field in Congleton.
