Other sources of vertical and oblique aerial photographs

Many people contact the council to enquire about other available sources of aerial imagery. Listed below are just a few web sites that should prove useful in helping you to find particular sources and types of aerial photography. There are many other web sites quickly accessible via internet search engines which also include useful and relevant information regarding aerial photographs. Please note that the council can give no recommendations about any of the firms or their products or the appropriateness of their products for any use. This list is intended for use as a guide only.

Council held Aerial Photographs

1) Cheshire County Council Archives and Local Studies ‘H’‘V’‘O’‘S’

The 1970s aerial survey of Cheshire can be compared with tithe maps and O.S. 1st-3rd Edition maps.

The Archives and Local Studies Service also have 28 Oblique aerial photographs covering parts of Cheshire available online.

2) Discover Cheshire 'M''S'

Find out about a wide range of walking, cycling and riding routes across the area using interactive mapping and the getmapping 1999-2001 aerial survey.

3) Cheshire County Council - Environment Department ‘H’‘M’‘V’

Full county vertical aerial coverage for 1940s, 70s, 80s, 90s an 00s with copyright restrictions for most of the 40s and all of the 00s. Other aerial surveys covering parts of the county only from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 90s.

4) Cheshire County Council - Salt Museum 'H''O'

The Salt Museum hold 92 oblique aerial photos covering Northwich ranging in date from 1904/1920 to 1985. Please call ahead to arrange a viewing with the museum. Hold a recently captured 2005/6 (25cm Resolution) vertical survey of Cheshire and older surveys.

3) CUCAP - Cambridge University Collection of Air photos ‘H’‘M’‘V’‘O’‘S’

Hold a wide collection of aerial photos covering many parts of Cheshire.

Hold 1940s Historic, some modern (both 25cm resolution imagery) and satellite imagery of Cheshire.

5) Getmapping  ‘H’ M’ ‘V’‘S’

Hold a 1999 – 2001 survey (25cm resolution) of Cheshire and a 2004 partial survey (15cm resolution).

6) National Monuments Record (English Heritage) ‘H’‘V’‘O’

The NMR comprises over 3 million aerial photographs, both vertical and oblique. The larger part of the collection is black and white and dates from the mid 1940’s to the 1990’s. The NMR also have a substantial collection of modern colour photographs of archaeological/historical sites.

7) Old Aerial Photos.com ‘H’‘V’‘S’

Old aerial photos.com can source, photos (prints and digital) from the 40s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s for the Cheshire and the rest of the country.

Hold coverage of many UK Cities.

Hold oblique aerial photos of various large scale engineering projects. Hold aerial photos covering  Manchester Airport captured during the construction of the 2nd Runway.

6) Skyscan ‘H’‘M’‘V’‘O’ and ‘S’ pending

Hold an oblique aerial photo library from 1984 to date including photography from the unique Skyscan ® balloon borne camera system. Skyscan are also able to perform in-depth searches for historical aerial photos held in archives throughout the UK for legal disputes and historical research. 7) SkyViews - ‘H’‘O’

Hold the largest known archive of aerial photographs with 10 million oblique aerial photos covering all parts of the U.K. including repeat Cheshire coverage dating from 1968 through to 1997. The collection is property focussed. 1960s and 70s coverage includes rural households whereas the 80s and 90s coverage was expanded to include rural households, small/medium size towns and areas of rural/urban fringe.
