Crewe South East Quadrant
Cheshire County Council is working in partnership to promote, enhance and guide development in an area of Crewe known as the South East Quadrant. The partnership, which also comprises Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council, the Northwest Development Agency, Manchester Metropolitan University, South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce and the Learning & Skills Council, is committed to the regeneration and enhancement of Crewe South East Quadrant.
The South East Quadrant is an area of opportunity which is likely to experience significant change over the next 10-20 years. Key projects and activities within the Quadrant include:
- the redevelopment of Crewe Railway Station
- major new employment development at Basford East and West;
- completion of Crewe Business Park and new employment development at Crewe Green;
- enhancement and consolidation of Manchester Metropolitan University’s Crewe campus to accommodate the relocated Alsager facility; (http://www.cheshire.mmu.ac.uk/)).
In order to ensure that development and change occurs in a coordinated manner, maximising the benefits for the local community and the wider area, a masterplan strategy was commissioned by the Partners in 2003. The masterplan, which was produced by consultants and has been subject to public consultation. The masterplan strategy includes an Action Plan which sets out key tasks for the short, medium and long term.
Other key issues for the South East Quadrant include:
- Ensuring that residents of Crewe, particularly those living in the more deprived areas, have the opportunity to benefit from new employment opportunities. This involves ensuring that the right training programmes are in place and forging links between employers and education providers.
- Ensuring that effective public transport, cycle and pedestrian networks are in place, in particular linking the town centre, employment areas and housing.
- Promoting and marketing the area as an attractive location for businesses.
- Enhancing and greening the environment, in particular the rail sidings.
- Maximising the benefits arising from the expansion of Manchester Metropolitan University in Crewe.
- Redeveloping and regenerating Crewe railway station and its environs.
- Maximising the wider benefits of redeveloping the town centre.
