It has been widely recognised that the region's garden assets lack the support and recognition of other natural and cultural heritage features.  April 2003 saw the formation of the European Garden Heritage Network, consisting of a series of partners from France, Germany and the UK, to ensure gardens and parks are managed positively as heritage cultural assets to promote regional development and sustainable tourism.

Now in the second year of a 3 year programme, this innovative project is rapidly picking up momentum, working with a variety of organisations to enhance the North West garden heritage.  The project builds on the work of a range of new rural/urban environmental regeneration initiatives to enhance the existing strengths of the region, including the Royal Horticultural Show, allotments, Britain in Bloom, and designs on gardens.

Project Outline

The project will set out the need for forward planning to safeguard and celebrate these 'garden identities' in north-west Europe, by:

  • Establishing the role of gardens and landscape within spatial planning.
  • Developing the cultural, economic and social value of gardens to a region through the promotion of their environmental value.

Key Project Action Areas

The project will therefore develop through the creation of six key action areas, the first three of which Cheshire will have an important contribution towards:

  • Spatial Strategy
  • Inter-Regional Gateway
  • Transnational Themes
  • Access
  • Education
  • Interpretation
