Flood Risk

Main heading

Sub-heading

Emergency Planning

  1. Keep an emergency pack of torch and radio with batteries, candle, matches, bottled water and perhaps a camping gas cooker ring
  2. Protect doorways and low level air vents with sandbags or rubbish bags filled with earth
  3. Turn off gas and electricity
  4. Move as much as you can, including food, upstairs
  5. If you are trapped by flooding, remain near a window to attract attention
  6. Call Floodline at the environment agency on 0845 988 1188 for warnings and information
  7. Check on your neighbours, particularly those who are elderly or infirm

Transport and Roads

Please contact your Area Highways Team. Check out the Environment Agency information on flood warnings in the North West Region or ring the floodline on 0845 988 1188 - (this number is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week).

Please do not drive or walk through flood water - just two feet of water will float your car and six inches of fast flowing water will knock you off your feet!

Planning and Development

In determining planning applications for new development, the Council is required to consider the possible flood risk implications. Different areas of the County may be more or less prone to flooding, and development in some areas may therefore be less desirable. In considering this the Council will consult with the Environment Agency.

For further guidance and information on flood risk and flooding related to planning applications, please visit the Environment Agency website.
