Archaeology Fieldwork

The information provided in this section gives details of archaeological fieldwork carried out in Cheshire (excluding Chester District) and Warrington and Halton unitary authorities since April 1999. The information is updated on an annual basis. Fieldwork is entered under the appropriate year and sites are arranged by district council and unitary authority area.

The essential information included for each entry consists of site name, eight-figure grid reference, type of project, name of archaeological contractor, date of fieldwork, and the period which the project was designed to investigate.

In those instances where significant deposits were encountered, a link is provided to a section giving further brief details of the discoveries made.

Features on Recent Archaeological Investigations

This section contains features which summarise the results of minor pieces of fieldwork.  Individually, such sites may not be worthy of formal publication but the synthesis of several pieces of work often allows a reassessment of previous theories.

This does not include copies of documents held in the Cheshire Historic Environment reports library for developer-funded fieldwork, which is summarised in the annual fieldwork sections.
