Spring in Astbury
1.
Thank you for the picture Of daffodils which blow On Astbury Green in Springtime Undaunted by the snow.
2.
Memories of my father Those flowers brought to me If he can choose his Heaven On that Green he’ll be.
3.
Dancing midst the “daffies” As in the days of yore He danced with Morris Dancers. The Green was then their floor.
4.
In Astbury at Wakes time Our family always met. And also at the May Day A party tea was set.
5.
My Great Aunt in command, The village shop did run. Sweets, bread and little treasures To us it was great fun.
6.
The house still lit by oil lamps In Nineteen sixty three. From the tap cold water only For washing up the tea.
7.
But o’er the huge fire’s magic Twinkling brass did glow - Horse brasses, kitchen items - In use not long ago.
8.
Around the lamp-lit table Old and young together, Discussing rhymes and stories, Or changes in the weather.
9.
Enchanted days now long gone, No more to pass my way, To life brought by a picture In my newspaper today.
