Brittannia at DuskThe sunlight melts from old Britannia's face; she is at peace, a proud and stately queen. No crude graffiti to corrupt her grace, The sting of triumph's cost now clearly seen. Long shadows casts she on the ground, and now a darkness falls on names of faceless men. She's deaf to those debates that went on; how could they deny that she seemed smaller then? She's found her place – her cold eyes stare away to meet the gaze of figures carved in stone that guard the town hall's doors. So ends this day like all the others that before have gone. With dignity, she steps free of her chains into the night, and waits for light again.
FleamarketCrewe market on a wet, winter Wednesday smells of hotdogs. The air is caffeine-rich under dripping tilts, where yesterdays 'shop 'til you drop' bargains jostle souvenirs of Spanish holidays. Embodied in ebony, the Masai warrior hurls his broken spear into a rainforest of ragged umbrellas. And his woman, carved from the heart of Africa, the grain of famine and flood curved across breast and buttock, stands naked and bewildered amongst the piles of plastic.
