Be a Local History Detective

Teachers! Are you looking for a way to inspire your pupils to investigate their local area?

Try using the Tithe maps and apportionments, available online via e-mapping Victorian Cheshire.

Things you may be tempted to say or think…
things you might be tempted to say: we haven't got time to get to grip with new initiatives like this. how can we fit this in with the other demands being made on us? we don't know the first thing about these, so how can we use them with our children?
These web pages, written by a practising KS2 teacher, working closely with archivists at the Cheshire Record Office, have been produced to make it easy.  They include
  • Background information to support you, the teacher, to approach these valuable historical resources, how to understand, interpret and use them!
  • Exciting ways in to the project, which will grab the attention of your class.
  • Suggestions on using open ended questionning, allowing creativity to follow up!
  • Worksheets with generic questions to suit any area of the curriculum.
  • Information to support pupil learning.
  • Cross curricular ideas for further development linking to the National Curriculum objectives in History, Geography, Art, I.C.T., etc.
  • Meaningful links with the National Literacy Strategy and Numeracy Strategy!
read these children's comments. the most important thing i've learned today was how to work together to solve problems. i've enjoyed being a detective. we got to do something new.
