  • Search by postcode
  • Find links to frequently asked questions
  • Jump directly to the tithe map for a particular township
  • Go to the maps page

Maps page

  • Use the bar with magnifying glass to zoom in and out
  • When you hover over a map, you will find that your cursor changes to a hand . Use this to move the maps around. You will find that as you move one map the other map moves with it.
  • The Overview Map shows you where you are in the county (the boundary shown is the pre-1974 county, plus parts of Warrington).
  • The Centred On pane below gives the township, parish, grid reference and date and reference of the tithe map you are centred on.
  • At the bottom of the page there is a Jump To Township option, which brings up a list of townships available. Click on the name to jump to the map for that township.

Clicking on this tab gives you the option of seeing

  • Township boundaries (in red)
  • Plot boundaries (in blue)
  • Plots coloured by land owner (only for the township you are centred on)
  • Plots coloured by land use (for the whole county). Bear in mind that this information is not given in each tithe apportionment.

Use the ‘Clear Highlight’ button to remove the colours or boundaries.

Highlighted

This tab is used to display search results. For further help with searching see Tithe Maps For Family History.

'Original Map' option

In the ‘Centred On’ pane you will see a link to ‘View Original Map’. Clicking on this will bring up the tithe map as it looks if you look at the original map at the Cheshire Record Office – not cut around the boundaries of the township, for example. The allows you to see such things as the scale of the original, the surveyor’s name, the compass rose, etc. Use the zoom tool and the hand icon to pan around the map.
