Searchroom Facilities
How many users can we accommodate? We have 17 microfilm readers, 2 microfiche readers and 16 tables for consultation of original documents. There is also a table for consulting large documents and maps.
Copying from microfilm/microfiche Our coin operated reader printer gives you the opportunity to take your own copies from microfilm and microfiche. This costs 50p per frame.
CD-ROMs and the Internet Available on CD-ROM in the searchroom:
- Bertram Merrell Marriage Index of Cheshire Parishes 1580 - 1837 (this includes also the Hartley Jones Index of marriages in Wirral parishes 1580 - 1850)
- We also have five Internet PCs available, with bookmarked links to useful websites for family and local history. These include the library version of Ancestry.com which you can access free of charge

Finding what you are looking for
- Catalogues, indexes, the Cheshire Record Office Guide and the Chester Archives Guide are available to help you identify the references of records you would like to see. We are happy to offer you any help you need, so do ask if you have a query.
- Our online catalogue is updated each month.

- As the records are unique and irreplaceable, we ask you to observe a few simple rules to protect them including :
- documents may not be removed from the searchroom.
- pencils only may be used in the searchroom : no form of ink is permitted - even for your own notes!
- no smoking, drinking or eating (including sweets and chewing gum).
- please do not lean upon any document or place upon it any paper on which you are writing.
- Copies of our searchroom rules are displayed prominently in the searchroom. Please ask if you have any queries
- You can take your own, digital, photographs of documents free of charge. Please consult the archivist on duty and turn off your flash
Other users
- To avoid disturbing other users, please don't enter into lengthy discussions about your research in the Searchroom - you are however welcome to do this in our cloakroom over a cup of coffee.
- Please switch off your mobile 'phones.
