Walking Buses
A walking bus consists of a group of children who are escorted by adults on the journey to and from school. There are usually two adults, one who is the ‘driver’ and leads the bus and the other is the ‘conductor’ and walks at the back of the bus.
The walking bus scheme would operate a rota system of volunteers allowing them ‘time off’ from the school run to get ready for work, relax or have that cup of tea they never have time for!
A Walking Bus is ideal for all! Children who already walk to school can participate as well as children who currently travel short journeys to and from school by car. Children who live too far to walk all the way could be driven to the start of the walking Bus.

Walking Reward Scheme (STEPS)
The S.T.E.P.S scheme involves the children walking all of the way or part of the way (at least 5 minutes walk from school) to and from school. At the end of a week, they receive a coloured sticker that indicates how many times they walked to school that week. Children with a certain amount of stickers win prizes.
Park and Stride scheme
Parents park at a drop off point, and the child walks (alone or with their parent or walking bus) from this point.
