About Us

Cheshire Museums Service is based in Northwich in the same building as the Salt Museum.  We have overall responsibility for the Salt Museum and Stretton Watermill, but also work with other museums and a range of heritage organisations across Cheshire. 

Our Role 

  • working with national, regional and local bodies to support and promote our local heritage and museums.
  • developing joint projects and seeking external funding opportunities
  • providing revenue support to a number of independent Accredited museums
  • acting as curatorial advisor to small museums
  • providing the secretariat for Cheshire Museums Forum
  • caring for archaeological material, especially excavation archives, from across Cheshire (excluding Chester District).

Facilities

The Service has a small library for reference only with books and periodicals.  The archaeology store at Runcorn can be made available to researchers.  Both the library and the archaeology store must be pre-booked.
