WiseMoves is the name of the Council staff travel scheme for its own employees. It has been developed as part of the authority's overarching Staff Travel Strategy and was approved by the Council Management Board and Policy Committee in October 2000.

Why does the Council need a Staff Travel Strategy? A common complaint raised by The Council employees is that traffic problems are getting worse. Our own traffic forecasts show that congestion in Cheshire is increasing and not only at peak periods.
There is widespread alarm about the impact of traffic pollution on air quality and the effect of this on those who suffer from respiratory problems such as asthma. We only have limited parking spaces at many of our workplaces. This is leading to growing difficulties in finding a car parking space once staff have reached work. Every day we drive the equivalent of once around the Equator undertaking business trips. Research has found that the majority of our staff travel on their own by car every day to reach work. We all agree that something needs to be done to reduce the problems caused by the amount of traffic on our roads but often we are not sure what we can do to make a difference.
To help, our strategy has been prepared as a way to set out simple step by step suggestions to inform staff about the range of alternatives available to help reduce traffic problems.
This is not anti-car. We want to give staff more choice in how they reach work or travel on Council business. For some people the car will remain the only realistic option available. However, for many people, using an alternative just once or twice a week is not only practical, it can make a real difference as well !
Since its introduction in 1996, the Staff Travel Strategy has been responsible for a number of initiatives and modest improvements which have provided staff with more choice in how they reach work. The introduction of the WiseMoves Staff Travel Strategy is particularly important as it comes at a time when the Council is engaged in work to help a growing number of Cheshire companies and organisations develop their own Travel Plans.
