Content
We try to write the content of the website in simple, easy to understand language and avoid jargon and 'Council terms', where possible. We are registered with the FOSI Family Online Safety Institute which is an international, non-profit organisation of internet leaders working to develop a safer internet.
We aim to explain what each area of the website contains on its homepage (the main index page of each area) to help you find the information you need. If you do have any problems however, please see 'Usability' below for a few tips on navigating this website.
This website should still be usable if images are turned off. We aim to provide a 'text only' version of all graphical images to ensure all the content on the website is accessible.
Where sound is used such as for MP3s and Podcasts, we aim to provide a transcript.
Navigation
This website has been developed so you can find the information you require quickly and easily. There are several ways to navigate around the site, which we have explained further below.
1. Main site navigation On every webpage on the left hand side there is a list of topics based on services we provide, recommended by Government guidelines. Behind each of this topics is a ‘homepage’ which lists all the sub-topics in this area.
2. A-Z of Website Topics Across the top of every page there is an A-Z menu which lists topics on the site. You can select the first letter of the topic you need, find and select it from the alphabetised list and it will take you straight there.
3. Breadcrumb Trail The breadcrumb trail is the list of links under the Council logo on the top left of the screen. This shows you where you are in the website structure. You can get back to the homepage (index page) of a topic by selecting a link from the trail.
4. Quick Links On the homepage of the website (at www.cheshire.gov.uk) at the right hand side, you will find a drop down box entitled ‘Quick Links for…’. Here you can select information specifically relating to an audience listed in the drop down menu; for example, select ‘Business’ and a list of links to pages on the website related to Business will appear.
5. Related Items In several areas of the site, on the right hand side, ‘Related Items’ will appear with links to all or some of the following:
- Policies and Standards
- News Releases
- Links
If you select one of these, you will be directed to a list of News Releases associated with the area of the site you were viewing. For example, if you were viewing the Education homepage at http://www.cheshire.gov.uk/Educationandlearning/ and you selected ‘News Releases’ from the Related Links on the right hand side of the page, you would be taken to a list of News Releases about Education.
6. Search There are 4 different ways to use our search:
A. Basic Search At the top right of every webpage there is a search box. Type in the word or phrase relating to the information you are looking for, e.g. ‘Council Meetings’, select the ‘Go’ button next to it, and you will be presented with a list of pages starting with the most relevant, to the search word you have entered. Once you are on the search results page, you should perform another search by entering a word or phrase in the search box on the page, rather than in the top right box again.
B. Advanced Search There is also an option to perform an ‘Advanced Search’, which asks you for more specific phrases or words to perform your search on.
C. Information Type The search also enables you to refine the results by ticking or unticking the page types using the check boxes:
- Documents
- Minutes
- Press Releases
- Webpages
For example, if you only wanted to view a document about Council Meetings, you could tick 'documents', untick the other options and click the ‘Search’ button again.
D. Search Wider If you cannot find what you need on the Council website, select the ‘Search Wider – All Cheshire’ tab. This will search across other websites which we link to, such as the District Council websites, Fire, Police and other partnership or Government sites.
