Annually Funded Organisations

The Council funds four arts organisations annually: Cheshire Dance, Chester Gateway Theatre, Action Transport Theatre Company and Chester Festivals Ltd (formerly a number of separate arts festivals including Chester Literature and Summer Music Festivals). The Council require all four to use the financial support efficiently and effectively to provide high quality arts work and achieve specific targets.

Cheshire Dance

Cheshire Dance is the development agency for dance in the county and are strategically important to the Arts infrastructure.

Cheshire Dance supports artists, educators and communities by encouraging, fostering and resourcing their activities and creating links between them. The company works directly with over 32,000 people each year on participatory projects, whilst also promoting a programme of professional dance performance.

Cheshire Dance is a partner of Dance Northwest

Cheshire Gateway Theatre

Chester Gateway Theatre is the ‘engine room’ of performing arts for Chester and its environs, producing imaginative and progressive work.

Amongst their aims is a wish to nurture community ‘ownership’ by broadening engagement with existing and potential consumers and creators. This involves a commitment to providing introductions for people of all ages and abilities to live theatre and to giving artists of all ages the opportunity to develop by supporting models of working practice and innovation.

Action Transport Theatre

Action Transport Theatre Company’s principal role is to provide high quality professional touring productions, reaching audiences in schools, community venues and theatres. Their aim is to create exciting, meaningful theatre for and with young people. In reflecting their ideas and experiences, they can create work which amazes, enriches and which sometimes changes young peoples' lives.

Young people are encouraged to express themselves through writing for performance and are offered opportunities to create their own work. Action Transport provides skills training for both youngsters and professionals and generally promotes young people’s theatre in the region, developing a fun working environment in which creativity and flair can flourish.

Chester Festival

Chester Festival Ltd is a new company, set up to unify and co-ordinate festival activity in Chester from April 2003. It manages the Summer Music Festival which takes place annually in July and which promotes an average of thirty concerts over a two-week period including outdoor pop events, celebrity recitals, a firework spectacular, and events for children. The Music Festival celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2002.

Chester Festival Ltd also manages the Chester Literature Festival, begun in 1986. This annual festival, held each October, has international and nationally known writers and poets as guest speakers. Their events include a literary lunch, literary dinner, workshops, competitions and events for children.

Over the next 12 months, Chester Festival's activity will be broadened and developed to include community and education work, and the promotion of other festival activity.
