Arts Council Funding

Arts Council England is the national body for the arts in England. They distribute public money from Government and the National Lottery to artists and arts organisations, both directly and through the Regional Arts Boards. The government grant in 2002/03 was £297.3 million. The funding is used to provide regular funding and one-off grants and awards. The arts are one of the good causes receiving funds from the National Lottery, and the Arts Council is also given a proportionate share of the money raised by ticket sales each year.

The Arts Council funding programmes seek to support the highest artistic achievements and to make these available to as many people as possible; encourage new work and new audiences; to bring challenging art to all sections of the community; and to celebrate diversity of cultures that contributes so much to England's artistic life.

Lottery Funding

The National Lottery currently generates funds for six good causes: the arts, sport, heritage, charities and the New Opportunities Fund. The Arts Council of England is responsible for distributing lottery money to arts projects in England. For further funding information, see their web site.

National Foundation For Youth Music

National Foundation for Youth Music (NFYM) is a delegate body of the Arts Council, established to promote and develop music opportunities for young people, up to and including 18 years old. Its funding programmes have a particular emphasis on reaching young people who have limited access to music-making opportunities. Applications are measured against four policy objectives: access, breadth, coverage and quality.
