Here in Cheshire gardeners don’t let the grass grow under their feet. All is bright and beautiful - as horticulture forms a key part of the county’s long-held tradition. Carefully-tended gardens along highways and hidden byways delight the passer-by from season to season.

From lavishly ambitious landscapes which owe their heritage to the wealth of times passed, to carefully-tended cottage style gardens with a charm of their own - Cheshire’s fertile soil and mild climate is a seedbed for magnificent growth.

In June The Cheshire Show - mainly agricultural, but offering a range of set-piece displays with gardening themes. Arley Garden Festival at Arley Hall, near Northwich, features a floral marquee, designer gardens and specialist nurseries from around the country. Ness Garden Festival at Ness Botanic Gardens, South Wirral showcases displays by a range of horticultural societies, quality plants at growers’ prices along with plant clinics, guided garden tours and children’s activities.

Cholmondeley Castle Temple GardensAnd in July The Royal Horticultural Society’s annual crowd-pulling world-class five-day Flower Show in the magnificent grounds of Tatton Park, near Knutsford. This garden lovers’ Holy Grail is not to be missed -providing tantalising insight into the latest in garden trends, awe-inspiring exhibits, plus the low-down of getting the best from your garden - be it a modest ‘back to back’ or a landscaped triumph. Close to the Georgian mansion at Tatton Park, near Knutsford - owned by the National Trust and managed by the Council - is a world-class 50 acres of superb gardens and magnificent park land. Other top attractions include Arley Hall and Gardens, famed for its stunning, historic herbaceous borders; beautiful Cholmondeley Castle with its delightful Temple Garden and,overlooking the Dee Estuary, the superlative Ness Botanic Gardens.
