Lovers of literature have a storehouse of storylines to explore in Cheshire.
The angst of modern-day ‘soap’ sagas of Mersey TV’s Hollyoaks on Channel Four and Granada TV’s enduring favourite, Coronation Street have each been played out by cast members on Cheshire soil.
Chester forms a familiar backdrop for Hollyoaks while Arley Hall in Macclesfield and Nunsmere Hall in Sandiway, Northwich have featured regularly as locations in ‘The Street’. The ITV hit series Cold Feet helped put Chester Racecourse – and over 30,000 real-life race goers - on the map with its saga of aspirational cosmopolitan Manchester city-dwellers.
The unique Whitfield collection of novels and other publications by Mrs Gaskell along with Gaskell Society Journals and newsletters help paint a colourful picture of the influential writer’s life.
Many film and TV companies have discovered Cheshire’s treasure trove of locations provide the perfect setting and backdrops for a huge variety of productions: Lyme Park, at Disley featured in the BBC production of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, and TV adaptations of the seminal Brideshead Revisited was filmed at Tatton Park at Knutsford and Galsworthy’s Forsyte Saga in Willington near Tarporley.
