Introduction

Welcome to Cheshire County Council's Corporate Plan for 2008-09.

The Plan sets out our targets and key areas of focus for the next year so that every one of our 23,000 strong workforce, and 51 elected County Councillors, know what part they need to play in delivering quality services to over 680,000 people every day.

As community leaders, and provider of around 80% of local government services in Cheshire, we truly are part of people's everyday lives, whether we are providing care in their homes, educating children in schools, mending the roads, lending library books or carrying out a whole range of jobs that make Cheshire a great place to live, learn, work, invest and enjoy.

This is why we place so much emphasis on ensuring that our services continue to be shaped by public views through regular consultation exercises, and feedback from service users and staff.

From March 2009, the County Council will no longer exist in its present form. Instead, together with the Cheshire District Councils, it will be replaced by two Unitary Authorities, namely ‘Cheshire West and Chester’ and ‘Cheshire East’. Therefore, we will be helping to ensure a smooth transition to new local government arrangements in the county as we strive to provide quality local services at an affordable price for many years to come.

Whilst the context that we are operating within may be a changing one, we have continued to set ourselves ambitious targets based on our best estimates of the resources likely to be available. We will, of course, need to keep both targets and resources under constant review to ensure we continue to provide value for money for the Cheshire tax payers.
