Restricted byways
All ‘roads used as public paths’ which remained on the Definitive Map were reclassified as ‘restricted byways’ on 2 May 2006 when sections 47 – 52 of the CROW Act were ‘commenced’.
There were originally 199 ‘roads used as public paths (or ‘RUPPs’) shown on Definitive Maps of Cheshire. Of these 52 were reclassified as footpaths, bridleways or ‘byways open to all traffic’ (or ‘BOATs’) under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 so 147 RUPPs remained on the Definitive Map at the start of May 2006 when each became a 'restricted byway'.
A full list of Cheshire’s restricted byways is available here. |

The names of each of the 'restricted byways' have been given where these are known and some brief notes have been added in some cases. Please note that some of those which are labelled 'cul-de-sac' may continue as public footpaths and so are only dead-ends for riders, cyclists and carriage-drivers.
