The Sandstone Trail

Main heading

Sub-heading

The Sandstone Trail

Stride out along the Sandstone Trail and sample some of the finest walking in Cheshire. Follow the ridge of sandstone that rises dramatically from the Cheshire plain and enjoy this invigorating walk at any time of year.

The original Sandstone Trail officially opened in 1974. It has now been extended, so it now links the towns of Frodsham and Whitchurch. This not only makes it more accessible by public transport, but also means you can enjoy some of the excellent facilities available in each town.

View from the Sandstone Trail

The Trail has been split into three sections of 17km or just over 10 miles, which most people should find an enjoyable days walk. Because the route follows the sandstone ridge, there are few facilities along the Trail - most pubs, cafes and shops are a short distance away. Please check opening times and always take some food and plenty to drink with you.

Following Waymarks

The Trail is well marked, using a mixture of finger posts and yellow waymark discs with an 'S' in a footprint. Waymarks indicate the way to go as you stand directly in front of them. Often there is a clear path on the ground, but some field paths may not be quite so obvious. Some paths go around the edge of fields, others go straight across. Look out for stiles in the hedges, and lines in the grass showing where others have walked.

Out in the Country

Please keep to the paths across farmland and leave all gates as you find them.

Remember, paths may be wet and muddy at any time of year!

Dogs should be kept under control so they are not a nuisance to other walkers, farm animals or wildlife.

The Trail uses both permissive routes and public rights of way. You should not experience any problems using the rights of way network but if you do, please report them to the PROW Maintenance and Enforcement Unit on 01606 271830 or email countryside@cheshire.gov.uk.

AccessibilityAccessibility:

Surfaces along the Trail vary depending on the nature of the terrain, but they may be rough and uneven or slippery. The Trail is quite hilly and there are a number of short but fairly steep sections. In places these may be over natural bedrock, elsewhere there are built steps. Stiles are gradually being replaced with gates where possible, to make access easier.
