Cycle Safety Code | Look After Yourself | Consider Others | Keep On Track | Cycle Rescue
- Wear a helmet and bright clothing
- Check your bike is mechanically safe
- Make sure your chosen section of route is within your capabilities
- Follow the Highway and Country Codes
- The Cheshire Cycleway has been designed to avoid busy roads where possible. However, please remain alert when cycling on public highways.
- Some of the hills to the east of Macclesfield are very steep, take special care when cycling downhill - match your speed to the surface conditions and your skills
- Weather conditions can change rapidly even in summer, so carry warm and waterproof clothing and consider wearing a helmet
- This route is suitable for most bikes. There is a short off-road section with an uneven surface between Hassall and Alsager. Cyclists are advised to take care and if in doubt, dismount.
- Always give way to walkers, keep your speed down, as they may not hear you approaching.
- Horses can be easily frightened, please do not make unnecessary noise and disturbance around them. If you are approaching from behind, it is a good idea to call out so they know you are there. Please do not race past horses especially if you in a group; the speed and noise can cause them to panic.
- The majority of the route is in rural areas and you may encounter livestock on certain sections - please follow the advice of farm operatives.
- Cycling is permitted on the sections of towpath shown in the information but please remember that pedestrians always have priority.
- For advice on cycling along other towpaths please contact British Waterways
- The route may be modified in the future, or temporary diversions may be in place.
A nationwide cycle rescue service is offered by the Environmental Transport Association - ETA, 68 High Street, Weybridge, Surrey KT13 8RS Tel: 01932 828882.
Enjoy yourself!
