Saving Energy

Did you know?

  • Through energy use the average home emits more harmful CO2 gas than the average car
  • The average household could save £250 a year by installing energy efficient measures
  • Ordinary light bulbs use 4 times as much as energy saving alternatives
  • Average temperatures in the UK will be 2 degrees warmer in 2020
  • Cases of asthma, heat stroke and hay fever will increase due to warmer weather
  • For every minute the fridge door is open it takes 3 minutes to regain its temperature

Doing your bit - No Cost Measures

  • Only boil enough water in the kettle for what you need
  • Turn off lights in empty rooms
  • Close your curtains at dusk
  • Do not leave your TV or video on standby when not in use

  • Insulate your loft, walls, ceilings
  • Draught proofing doors and windows
  • Improve the heating controls within your home
  • When upgrading or purchasing new electrical appliances look for the Energy Label to help you choose the most efficient products

Doing your bit - Grants available to help

  • If you are on a low income there are a couple of national grant schemes that will pay for a variety of energy efficiency improvements in your home
  • All the district councils provide a variety of grant schemes providing discounted energy efficiency measures to owner-occupiers and private tenants / landlords.
  • Contact your electricity and gas supplier as they also run schemes for their customers providing discounts on energy efficiency measures
