Staff Travel
The County Council’s business travel has an enormous impact on the local, regional and national environment, which contributes to the effects of climate change. In January 2006, Cheshire County Council signed the North West Climate Change Charter. By signing up to the Charter, the Council has committed to putting:
“climate change at the heart of its internal decision making process”.
In addition, the Council endorsed the Climate Change Scrutiny Review Report on 12th July 2007 and, as such, is committed to mitigating its own operational carbon emissions.
Cheshire County Council introduced a staff travel strategy in 1996. In 2003, the strategy was branded WiseMoves with the main aim of encouraging staff to use sustainable modes of transport for their journey to work, and for travel on County Council business.
The County Council’s Local Transport Plan (LTP) sets out the overall objectives, strategy and delivery programme to take forward the transport priorities for the period 2006 to 2011. As part of this strategy it is recognised that traffic congestion is becoming an increasingly common problem throughout the County, especially in the larger towns and on main roads and motorways. Furthermore, transport remains one of the main sources of air pollution, which impacts on the environment and health of the community.
The County Council works with many organisations across Cheshire to develop Travel Plans which promote the use of alternatives to the car. It is, therefore, essential that the County Council leads by example and has an effective staff travel scheme for its own employees.
