Reducing Waste at Home

Did You Know?

  • In just over a week, the UK produces enough rubbish to fill Wembley stadium. Over half of which can be recycled If all the aluminium cans sold in the UK were recycled, there would be 12 million fewer full dustbins each year
  • Each tonne of paper recycled saves 15 average sized trees, as well as their surrounding habitat and wildlife
  • Every tonne of glass recycled saves over one tonne of raw materials like sand and limestone. This means less quarrying, less damage to our countryside, less pollution, valuable energy savings and less global warming.

Doing Your Bit- Reduce

  • Buy products with less packaging
  • Buy products that are durable and do not require disposable parts
  • Cancel Junk Mail by contacting the Mail Preference Society on 08457 034599

Doing Your Bit- Reuse

  • Reuse items such as bottles, carrier bags and refillable containers.
  • Use the backs of envelopes and paper for shopping lists etc
  • Cut up Christmas cards to make gift tags

Doing Your Bit- Recycling

  • Use your local authorities recycling facilities.
  • When you are going to the supermarket, make use of the recycling banks provided
  • Your waste can have a value to someone else - take old clothes, books, toys and bric-a-brac to charity shops or car boot sales.
  • About a third of household waste is kitchen and garden waste - help to reduce this by starting your own compost heap.

Doing Your Bit - Completing the Loop

  • Support recycling by buying recycled products.
