The Decade of ESD
In 2002 the World Summit on Sustainable Development which took place in Johannesburg, put forward the following recommendation to the United Nations General Assembly;
"that it consider adopting a Decade of Education for Sustainable Development starting in 2005"
The world summit in Johannesburg which was the 10 year follow-up to Rio reaffirmed education as the essential underpinning from which to develop more sustainably.
The aim of the decade is to promote education as a basis for a more sustainable human society and to integrate the principles of sustainable development into education systems at all levels.
This decade which has just begun will run from 2005-2014. There are many events planned for Cheshire and the wider world to raise awareness of how we can all live more sustainably.
