Eco Schools Award

In support of the application for Eco Schools, Belgrave County Infant School put forward the following items:

1. We have an Eco Committee of ten pupils, a teacher, headteacher, community governor and PTA member who meet each half term to discuss projects and disseminate information to their peers. They may vote on priorities-all votes have equal status!, working lunches are popular!!.

2. There are two reviews: the committee do "site walks" half termly and make a written agenda for discussion. The headteacher for governor's maintains a site management role, which includes governor sub-committee meetings on site, PTA discussion, parental views, staff comments.

3. An action plan was established. The school development plan includes current work.

4. A hedge was planted, weeded, strimmed and litter controlled. Recycling is extensive, plans for a maze are beginning.

5. The action plan is evaluated, monitored and reviewed.

6. All pupils are involved in curriculum work. Assemblies including recycling, caring for our world, harvest, friendship, care of nature. Extra mural education for years 0 and 1 was linked to environmental projects. Year 2 are looked at issues concerned with 2020 and the difference we can make to future environments. The school has an environmental education policy which states:

"we recognise that young children can be interested in environmental issues. We have a duty of care for our corner of the world".

7. A collage of action was prepared. A school grounds day was completed in spring time. Children took part in various activities including clearing, planting, pruning, enjoying and picnics!

School Run

8. Regular reporting takes place in the classroom, whole school, PTA meetings, Governers meetings about environmental issues.

9. Recycling is an important issue for the school. Paper bins are provided for the local community. Other items recycled are glass, stamps, film canisters, textiles, Christmas cards, shoes. Paper and envelopes are re-used.

10. The School has a simple Eco Code which is used as part of curriculum plans for science, geography, RE and English.

11. Eco Schools have provided a focus for community involvement. Ideas for school development have included thoughts for the school as central in our community and create a "green haven" as more land is taken for building.

Belgrave Playground

12. Litter is controlled by reminders to rubbish bins, stories and songs about litter, and a good caretaker who has a litter patrol each morning.
