Lake Vyrnwy (pronounced vernwi) is an RSPB reserve located about one and a half hours south west of Chester. The reserve is situated in a beautiful location sitting in the middle of the Berwyn mountains. A range of facilities are available including visitor centre and RSPB centre, parking, toilets, a classroom, shop, bird hides and nature reserve. The visitor centre has recently been extended to include a 3D cinema, where a 15 minute free introduction provides a good start for school visits.
The RSPB education scheme is also based at a nearby farm making it a stimulating and exciting school visit. The cost per pupil is £2.50 for a half day and £3.00 for a full day. Accompanying staff are free (costs as at January 2002). Accomodation can be made available.
All materials provided on the visit are free of charge and curricular resources can be obtained beforehand from the RSPB website located at www.rspb.org.uk/
A visit to Lake Vyrnwy provides practical opportunity to take forward Education for Sustainable Development and Citizenship links within the curriculum. The area has important links with the North West, Lake Vyrnwy providing all the water for Liverpool and Merseyside. The lake holds enough water to fill 702 million baths which is around 10 baths per person living in the UK. Although it is distant from Cheshire, it is well worth a visit, with the new building providing extra facilities for school visits.
