St Nicholas Catholic High School, Hartford

St Nicholas High School has been an Eco School since June 2000. The work has been co-ordinated by Dr Annie Leonard and the school Eco Group.

The School Eco Committee

St Nicholas Catholic High School in Hartford is the most recent Cheshire school to achieve Eco School status. The school received the award from Tidy Britain in June. The school has an active Eco Group of students from years 7-10 who are led by teachers Dr Leonard and Mrs Houghton. The group were described by the Eco School assessors as "honest, hardworking and articulate and were impressive ambassadors for their school".

The two areas that formed the basis for the Eco School Award were can recycling and paper recycling.

School can recycling scheme

The school tops Cheshire’s list for can recycling with £461 raised last year. The Eco Group set up can collection points and liaised with the site manager about the organisation of the collection. The Eco Group set up a competition to raise awareness of the can collection scheme.

Litter was the second element of the Eco School Award. The Eco Group has made links with other campus schools and is actively involved in reducing the litter problem around the campus. The litter project also extends into the Marshall’s Arm Nature Reserve.

A large number of other projects have been organised by the group including Eco assemblies, displays, competitions and projects. A recent competition was held for a new school Eco logo with over 100 entries.

Environment in the Curriculum

Environmental curricular work is equally diverse with the following actions taking place in the past twelve months.

Year 10 and 11 (PSE)
Year 9 (Maths students analysed litter and recycling data)
Years 7,8,9 (PSE, poster competition and Planet Pledges)
Year 8 (Science students developed ideas on Environment 2000)
Years 7 and 8 (Geography students completed litter surveys)
Year 7 (the completion of a special environment mini-topic)

Action Plan

The school is not standing still, but an action plan establishes future projects.

The on-going action plan looks to take forward a number of additional practical projects. These include the development of an attractive nature garden, to develop greater awareness about energy consumption and to design, plan and develop bird boxes.
