The following pages provide useful sources of information, ideas for action, inspiration and contacts for environmental school projects.

Email and Web site details for organisations that work with Cheshire Schools e.g. drama, willow weaving etc are provided in the Environmental Organisations Database.

Eco Schools

Eco Schools (UK)

Register for Eco Schools and receive a free pack with lots of information and advice on how to achieve the Bronze, Silver or Green Flag Award. Lots of information available on the website too, including a Kids Zone.

International Eco Schools

Eco Schools is part of an International network. Find out what is happening in other Eco Schools across the World and send in examples of what your school is doing.

Energy

Action Energy Provide school fact sheet on reducing energy consumption and how it can be incorporated into curriculum. Also can provide a free site surveys and follow up support for any site spending over £50,000 on energy bills.

Create  - Lots of resources for teaching energy in the classroom and how to reduce energy consumption in schools.

EST  - The Energy Saving Trust run an Energy Certification Scheme for Schools

Manweb PLC  - The Manweb site provides background information on energy issues and includes a good section on the Rural Care Programme.

TeacherNET - A one stop shop for providing links to other sites and the curriculum for a whole school approach to energy

Food Issues

Grab 5 - Lots of resources, activities and competitions to encourage pupils to eat 5 portions of fruit and veg a day.

Local Food Works - A wealth of information on sustainable local food procurement includes case-studies of schools that have included local food as part of school meals.

General

BBC Science and Nature - Provides very good background information on wildlife and science issues, anything from the extinction of the dinosaurs to Genetically Modified Crops

Centre for Alternative Technology - The CAT website provides very practical information on possible solutions to many of the environmental challenges faced by our society. Schools may wish to consider visiting the centre or taking an online visit to the centre through the website.

Channel 4 Planet Education Programme - The Channel 4 Environmental Education site provides a range of useful information for school projects.

Council for Environmental Education - CEE is an umbrella organisation for making sustainable development education more coherent throughout the UK.

Department For Environment, Food and Rural Affairs  - This is a government website of DEFRA and provides a range of background information on environmental and farming issues and policy within the UK.

Encams - This is a site with information about Encams and information on its campaigns for better local environments, from seaside awards to Britain in Bloom.

Envirolink - Envirolink is one of the largest worldwide grassroots organisations concerned with providing up to date environmental resources. The site gives good links to other environmental web pages. Good ideas for school projects.

Environment Agency - This is the official site of the government body regulating environmental issues in the UK and contains a range of useful information for schools. The Agency are the enforcement agency for most environmental legislation. The site contains guidance note, good practice, legislation and codes of practice.

Foundation for Environmental Education in Europe - Find out about FEEE and its four programmes which include European Eco Schools, Young Reporters for the Environment European Blue Flag Campaign and Learning about Forests.

Globe Programme

The Globe Programme is an international scheme providing links between schools on an environmental theme. The site provides background information, teacher links, pupil links, and enables teaching information to be downloaded.

Local Agenda 21 in the UK

A young peoples LA21 site, including links to the children's parliament and lots of other citizenship activities.

School Grounds and Wildlife

Cheshire Wildlife Trust

The site contains a broad range of information on the projects completed by the Wildlife Trust and their work completed in the county.

Growing Schools

Teachnet - designed to support teachers in using the outdoor classrooms as a resource. Includes links to funding sources an advice on health and safety

HDRA Organic Schools

HDRA - Provide a wealth of information and How to leaflets. Run an organic school network.

Learning Through Landscapes

Learning through Landscapes - National School ground charity providing information and advice on the development of school grounds.

Woodland Trust

Woodland Trust - A wealth of information on woodland management and a map service of woodlands across the UK.

Mersey Forest

Mersey Forest - This site provides useful background information on the Mersey Forest project to complement classroom work or a visit.

Groundwork

This web site contains details on the national operation of Groundwork and includes specific information on school and education projects.

Transport

Safer Routes To Schools - Information on setting up a Safer Routes to school project

Sustrans

Sustrans - Charity promoting alternative travel to the car. Guides and information on the 7000 miles of the National Cycle Network.

Teacher Net

Teacher Net - A one stop shop for links to the curriculum and further information on School Travel issues

Waste and Recycling

Alupro Recycling

Alupro Recycling - A comprehensive website covering the recycling of aluminium cans in the UK. There are Education projects and a scheme to convert cans into trees.

Blue Peter Appeal

Blue Peter Appeal - find out further information regarding the latest appeal and how you can help charities by recycling or re-using your waste.

Waste Watch

Waste Watch - A wealth of information on recycling and waste in the UK and curriculum resources for teachers on waste.

Water

Teacher Net - A one stop shop for providing information and links to the issue of water management in schools

United Utilities

United Utilities - is the web site of the main utility provider in the county and includes curriculum packs and activities for schools. Also provides advice on running a water conservation programme within schools.
